Really, Rachel…

A few thoughts from your friendly neighborhood opinionated woman.

Assume nothing; argue everything. June 18, 2008

I got in a typed-out tussle this morning after I posted a YouTube video of House of Representatives Tom Doe in which he presents an argument against the federal government legislating/mandating the use of the new CFL light bulbs by the year 2014.   My initial comment was simply that I am not in favor of this legislation.   After my initial post, several other posters commented on how it’s simply something for the environment, and how can that be bad?  One poster in particular actually came out and insinuated that I hate our country and therefore should go live elsewhere to see how good I have it.  To that, I responded with this:

Why do you think I’m getting riled up about this?  You’re reading into it like I hate my country – like I’m an individual like Michael Moore who constantly rails against the status quo of the United States and how horrible a nation it is with all of its policies, but yet he has no problem staying here and gleaning his millions from his (I use the term every so loosely) documentaries.  I am NOT that kind of person.

I LOVE the United States.  I love what it was meant to be from its inception – a land not only for the people but by the people.  It started because people were tired of being under a tyrrany.  And no one is acknowledging the fact that, as was pointed out in the video, there is nowhere in the Consitution of the U.S. (the document we are founded on and allegedly are supposed to adhere to) that gives federal government the power to make this kind of legislation.  I am angered about this, and many other far-reaching policies that are inevitably coming ’round the bend, because I see the freedoms assured to us by the Constitution getting ousted for assorted reasons and agendas.

I choose to live in the U.S.  I love it.  I know full well that I have it far better here then in I would living in another country.  However, because I love it means I should fight for what it is meant to be – a free nation.  When you have a free society, with a free market, you are obviously going to have members of that society who are not forward-thinking.  It’s a consequence of living in that society.  But, you all should be getting your wish in short order.  If Obama is elected, we’ll definitely be heading toward a socialist society and kissing tons of our freedom goodbye because our blessed federal government (run by individuals who, I’m sorry to say, care very little about what the general population wants or needs) knows better then we do and we should entrust our entire lives and choices to them.

I believe in this country.  Which is why things like this are getting me very riled up.  You are entirely misreading me by thinking I hate our country.  Rather, I hate what is happening to it.  That is all.

Throughout the thread to which I am referring, several key statements were made that caused me even more concern for where our nation is heading… with the full acceptance and approval of the majority of voting Americans.  One such comment made was this:  Because most people are too stupid to realize what’s good for them and have to be forced to make the right decision so they don’t screw it up for eveyone else.

WOW.  I think Stalin AND Marx just sat up in their graves and cried out for resurrection.  Bring on the socialism, America!
