What DO I want for my birthday? June 26, 2008

So Miah asked me this week what I’d like for my birthday this year.  Mind you, my birthday is a flippin’ SIX months away in December, so I questioned him as to why he’d ask me so far out.  He claims I asked him about his birthday wishes back after New Year’s, with his birthday being in June.  Um, NO, you are incorrect, sir!  He claims that he is right because there was snow/ice on the ground…hello, March in Colorado???  Easily possible for those conditions to occur!

But now we come to the real problem – what do I WANT???  Actually, I’ve determined that at my age and status of life, it’s more about what I might need vs. what I might want.  I really feel like I couldn’t do with any more luxuries – not anything practical anyway.  I know it sounds crazy, but I’m actually contemplating asking for a nice Swiffer vaccuum/mop so I can get all the dog hair up and then mop right away.  Hey, until you’ve lived with our dog, you don’t know my pain! :)

Or I could really use some more jewelry – and not diamonds or pearls.  I’m talking your typical silver necklaces and earrings!  I am in serious need of such things, as I only have one silver necklace I can wear that doesn’t look tarnished, and I’m a huge proponent of matching earrings & necklaces.

I can’t really ask for shoes because GOD knows I have plenty of those, plus I get the evil eye when I do bring a new pair home.

The only thing I was able to come up with on the spot was that I would LOVE a Wii Fit!  That is, unless we buy one prior to my birthday.  But after this baby comes out, I am SO going to need every bit of motivation I can find to get myself back into shape!

K, that’s it – please send thoughts and perhaps suggestions my way for me to be able to come up with good requests. :)

I got in a typed-out tussle this morning after I posted a YouTube video of House of Representatives Tom Doe in which he presents an argument against the federal government legislating/mandating the use of the new CFL light bulbs by the year 2014.   My initial comment was simply that I am not in favor of this legislation.   After my initial post, several other posters commented on how it’s simply something for the environment, and how can that be bad?  One poster in particular actually came out and insinuated that I hate our country and therefore should go live elsewhere to see how good I have it.  To that, I responded with this:

Why do you think I’m getting riled up about this?  You’re reading into it like I hate my country – like I’m an individual like Michael Moore who constantly rails against the status quo of the United States and how horrible a nation it is with all of its policies, but yet he has no problem staying here and gleaning his millions from his (I use the term every so loosely) documentaries.  I am NOT that kind of person.

I LOVE the United States.  I love what it was meant to be from its inception – a land not only for the people but by the people.  It started because people were tired of being under a tyrrany.  And no one is acknowledging the fact that, as was pointed out in the video, there is nowhere in the Consitution of the U.S. (the document we are founded on and allegedly are supposed to adhere to) that gives federal government the power to make this kind of legislation.  I am angered about this, and many other far-reaching policies that are inevitably coming ’round the bend, because I see the freedoms assured to us by the Constitution getting ousted for assorted reasons and agendas.

I choose to live in the U.S.  I love it.  I know full well that I have it far better here then in I would living in another country.  However, because I love it means I should fight for what it is meant to be – a free nation.  When you have a free society, with a free market, you are obviously going to have members of that society who are not forward-thinking.  It’s a consequence of living in that society.  But, you all should be getting your wish in short order.  If Obama is elected, we’ll definitely be heading toward a socialist society and kissing tons of our freedom goodbye because our blessed federal government (run by individuals who, I’m sorry to say, care very little about what the general population wants or needs) knows better then we do and we should entrust our entire lives and choices to them.

I believe in this country.  Which is why things like this are getting me very riled up.  You are entirely misreading me by thinking I hate our country.  Rather, I hate what is happening to it.  That is all.

Throughout the thread to which I am referring, several key statements were made that caused me even more concern for where our nation is heading… with the full acceptance and approval of the majority of voting Americans.  One such comment made was this:  Because most people are too stupid to realize what’s good for them and have to be forced to make the right decision so they don’t screw it up for eveyone else.

WOW.  I think Stalin AND Marx just sat up in their graves and cried out for resurrection.  Bring on the socialism, America!

Sorry, guys, you can’t get away from this one. I have the perfect scenario of a man doing his thing and a woman doing hers…and the man came up short. Nothing major, but there it is.

I LOVE my husband. I love that he’s organized as far as packing us up for trips, or helping me remember small details I might have forgotten. So I thought nothing of letting him handle the packing for our camping trip this weekend whilst I used all of my energy to pack my own clothes, Willis’ clothes, and then cleaned the house to show-quality before we left for the weekend. It’s also important to note that I did the grocery shopping for our trip the night before, so I knew a lot of items that were meant to be included in our camping stores.

We arrive to the campsite, and over the next 12 hours we realize that he forgot to pack: bread (for sandwiches), peanut butter or jelly (Willis’ favorite lunch), the OJ (for breakfast and Willis’ juice), paper towels, our friend’s grilling meat (which I pointedly asked him if we were taking when I saw it still sitting in the fridge before we left), and our frozen sausages (breakfast). I got particularly frustrated about the PB&J and OJ, since Willis can sometimes be finicky and I wanted something for him to eat that is a sure-fire meal option.

Anyway, let it be known that I will do whatever I have to next time to make sure we get it all packed. I can give him a small pass because 2 of his buddies that came with us were hanging around while he was packing up, so the distraction factor was higher than normal. Which just goes to show that he needed me more than ever because of it. :)

Strange things are afoot… June 11, 2008

I feel like I’ve traversed a desert and am finally nearing an oasis… which may or may not lead to a fruitful paradise.

Today I heard from TWO friends that I have fallen rather out of touch with over the past couple of years.  Blame it on having kids, blame it on changing jobs, or just blame it on me (which might be deserved), but it happened.  I hear similar stories from others who get married and/or have kids, especially if the two happen in close proximity to one another – some or most of their friends tend to fall to the wayside.  Sometimes it’s the choice of the friends, sometimes it’s the choice of the person in question, and sometimes it’s nothing in particular but a change in situation that people feel they can’t relate to any longer.

Anyway, however it happened, I’ve been without most of my close friends for the past 2 years.  I adore my husband, and my child is amazing and I love him too…but I’m a social person as well and it’s been killing me to not have a tight friend to relate to with any consistency.  Well, today I got a random phone call from one, and decided to email another based on a very weird yet timely dream I had the other night, and now it looks like I’m connecting with both of them this month!  Do I believe it’s accidental?  Not at all.  I’ve been going through some changes of heart and realizations of humility over the last couple of months, and I think God is doing a work in this situation.  At least, I hope He is. :)

If any of my other friends happen to read this, please know that I miss you all very much.  I know I’m not perfect, and I know you’ve been privy to times when I’ve handled myself foolishly and have thereby disappointed you…but please don’t let that cause you to turn your back on me forever and with finality.  This life is too short to be so quick to drop relationships when, in the end, aside from God’s love, they are all we really have.

ManBabies (and the women who create/sustain them) June 9, 2008

This morning a local radio station was offering free concert tickets to the winning story by a woman who was either maintaining or had maintained a “ManBaby” in their life.  Essentially, the term “ManBaby” was defined as a male who required above-and-beyond daily attention by the woman/women in their life.   Sustaining activities included, but were certainly not limited to, washing the entire man’s body for him in the shower, cutting his food, selecting his clothes for the day, and driving him to/from work (in spite of him having his own vehicle and driver’s license).  One woman even claimed that her husband sucks his thumb, will suck her thumb in the middle of the night, and defines “movie snuggling” as imitating a breast-feeding child nuzzling his wife.  (And we all say, “EWWWWW” to that one.)

My initial thought is not “what is wrong with these men,” but rather, “WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE WOMEN?”  Seriously?  At what point do you recognize that you have serious issues if you find it acceptable and actually take pleasure in enabling such behavior in a grown adult?  For me, this ranks right up there with the Duggar mom who keeps spouting out children to the point where she’s now pregnant with #18, or women who insist on breast-feeding their children until they’re well into elementary or even middle school.  Do you not see that you might, just might, have some personal issues of acceptance and control to where you are helping to propigate the immaturity and dysfunction of a fellow human being?

I completely get doing nice things for your significant other:  back rubs, preparing a meal and serving it to them, or even washing them if they are physically incapable of doing so themselves.  But if my man is able to wash his own damn butt crack, then he is going to do that all on his own!  And I am not by any means a women’s lib activist; rather, I’m a human functionality and maturity proponent.  I just frankly see no reason, other then a slew of dysfunctional options, why a mature and confident woman would elect to place herself in the role of a human crutch when there’s simply no need for it.

But, I suppose, the argument would be “to each their own.”  I just hope I am never related to a person who either gives or receives such extreme treatment; I doubt I’d be able to keep from rolling my eyes or dropping a sarcastic comment pertaining to their need for therapy.

I have attended two high school graduation ceremonies in the past month, and I have come away with the notion that there are some parents out there who need to actually pay attention to what their daughters are wearing when they leave the house.  Oh, and not just pay attention – they need to actually CARE and INTERVENE if their daughter is hardly distinguishable from a Colfax prostitute.

For example, while making my way to one of the entry doors into the Lecture Hall at the Denver Convention Center, I happened to fall in behind two teenage girls.  One of them was wearing a white bubble skirt (the type with elastic at the base so it puffs out slightly), and the material was sheer.  I could make out not only the fact that she was wearing a thong, but that it was slightly peach in color with a flower print at the top, and I could tell that her butt cheeks had a tan.  How wrong is that?  This poor girl was practically baring her ass to the world and sundry, and all I wanted to do was run behind her and hold the bouquet of flowers for my niece to cover her backside.

These poor girls these days.  It’s so sad to me that their role models in the entertainment world are giving them such skanky lows to sink to for that little bit of male attention for which they all strive.

I’ve used blogs before to document baby growth, general family stuff, but this time I think I’ll be slightly selfish and post my own thoughts about life, politics, friends, conflicts, and your general water-cooler talk. And, as you might already know, I love all things witty and humorous, so hopefully that’ll be forthcoming as well.

I’m already nervous about actually getting any visitors/comments to this blog – is that today’s newest status symbol: “MY blog is read and commented on by an average of 10 people for each post…” Eh. I think it’s just a nice kind of journal that you’re allowing people to read and dissect at will.
